The raw landscape of the Atacama Desert is part of a journey that began over a decade ago.  On the eve of the Milennium in 1999, we launched Balloons over Bagan, the first ever hot air balloon flights over the spiritual heartland of Myanmar.  Floating over thousands of ancient temples, in the silence and faint light of dawn, we wondered if we could ever find a site as awe inspiring.

We are happy to say that we did. On the invitation of some very passionate people, in 2015 we visited Chile for the first time and traveled through this beautiful country, rich in landscape, history and culture.

But it was the dramatic desert of the Atacama, one of the driest places on earth, that impressed us. With a vista of stark desert, stunning rock formations, all framed by a range of distant volcanoes, we were in awe.

Today, after over a year of preparation, we feel privileged to introduce you to Balloons over Atacama. We have stopped at nothing to bring you the safest balloon operation possible, with balloons custom made in the UK, the most experienced and senior pilots in the industry and third party and passenger liability of US$ 10 million per balloon. More than this, we bring with us a 17 year 100% safety track record, free of accidents and incidents.

But, of greater importance to us is that we bring an environmentally friendly form of travel to a unique, and fragile area.  Together with yourselves our passengers, we hope to bring sustainable tourism and positive benefits to the communities of the area. Finally, our goal is to create lasting memories for you and your loved ones, to experience with them the amazing creation of mother nature, the wonder that is the Atacama desert.

Respect for our community

Balloons over Atacama recognizes and respects the fragility of this beautiful environment and the critical role that communities play in safeguarding its future.

A strong commitment to community engagement and grassroots development underpins all our projects from Bagan to Bhutan and now in the Atacama Desert.

As well as providing local employment we are proud to work with the Community in sponsoring the first accredited English programs for the youth of San Pedro through Santo Tomas University . This commitment will enable more indigenous people to participate in the tourism sector and provide a platform for further opportunity both in and outside of San Pedro.

Respect for our environment

The Atacama desert is not only the driest place on earth but beneath its sands lies the remains of thousands of years of civilization. The communities and villages of San Pedro de Atacama date from before Christ and remains of this story make the Atacama a living museum.

The fragile nature of desert and it’s limited resources necessitate a respect to ensure sustainability.

At balloons over Atacama we consider all our actions with minimizing our impact in mind. From using solar power in our operations centre to ensuring we leave launch and landing sites as we find them. We are mindful in everything we do to adhere to the United Nations Environment Programme’s guidelines on managing the Social and Environmental Impacts in Desert Tourism and to ‘leave only footprints’.

The Balloons over Atacama team takes us back to our pioneering days in Myanmar when we launched Balloons over Bagan on the 31st December 1999. Our key technical team of pilots, examiners, airworthiness inspectors and maintenance engineers have been with us since those early years, and are joined by a new team in San Pedro of eager local ground crew and our management team in Santiago. With a combination of experience, diversity and youth, we all share the same passion for delivering an amazing "Atacmanean Experience" in this truly magical place.
